Wellington v Leamington Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 25 Jun 2011 at 12 noon
Leamington Cricket Club Won By 8 Wickets
Match report
Leamington 1st XI got their season back on track with a resounding eight wicket success away at Wellington Cricket Club.
Winning the toss, Wellington were inserted to bat in ideal bowling conditions, with overhead cloud and a pitch that had been covered prior to the start of the match. Leamington bowled well with the new ball, with Warner getting reward for pitching the ball up when he had opener Lamb caught in the gully. However, this was the only success for a while as Wellington moved on to 87 before Khomari (30) was caught off the bowling of Young by Best, who was making his return to the Leamington side having completed his Cambridge University duties. This then started a remarkable collapse as Young (10-2-34-4) and Faisal Khalid (14.5-3-26-5) bowled beautifully in tandem to eventually bowl Wellington out for 141 in the forty-second over. The pair were rewarded for bowling an excellent line and length and made scoring very difficult for the Wellington batsmen. Only Northamptonshire player, Shafayat, offered any resistance as he made 36 before falling to Young.
In reply, Balac (16) got Leamington off to a positive start, but when he was out any fears of a collapse were put to bed as Phillips (36) and Bailey put on 74 for the second wicket before Phillips was adjudged LBW. Bailey was then joined by Tom Lewis (10*) as the pair saw the team home in the forty-second over. Bailey completed an excellent 66* as Leamington secured a vital 20 points. The win will give the side an enormous lift with such an excellent performance after performing so disappointingly at Kidderminster the week before.
