Match report Another exciting low scoring encounter saw the III' lose out to Bretferton on run rate.
Batting first on a slow wicket Leamington made slow progress and at drinks were 50-2. At 66-4 with the quick departures of Lord (20) and Dale (16) impetuous was needed in order to set any sort of total. This was provided from Somra (27) and Mackrill (29) who quickly took the score up to a respectable 148, a total which would prove difficult to chase.
Opening bowlers Field and Khalid made early in roads into the Bretferton innings with Field taking to 2 wickets at Khalid 1 before Berry launched a counter attack, who was particularly punishing on anything short before he was dismissed LBW to Khalid. The Bretferton middle order of Jones and Cafero looked to be ending the contest in a hurry with some lusty blows before the introduction of Lord and Khan, 2 wickets apiece reduced Bretferton to 110-8 and put Leamington firmly in control.
With rain in the air Spa needed the last 2 wickets quickly as Bretferton, although under the cosh, were ahead of the required run rate. When the inevitable rain came and wiped out 10 overs of play and when the match resumed the hosts were left the formality of chasing a reduced total of 112. A rather unjust end to the game but sets up an interesting return fixture at Arlington Avenue this weekend.
